Removing plastic waste and protecting sea turtle nests on the beaches of the Valencia region are the key action lines of the agreement we’ve signed with Xaloc Mar, an NGO working since 2009 to preserve marine ecosystems. Through this collaboration, we reinforce our environmental and social commitment, aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Just ahead of World Oceans Day, on June 8, Shop&Roll and Xaloc Mar have formalised a three-year agreement — with the shared intention of extending it over time and adding new initiatives that will have a direct, positive impact on marine conservation.
We will support beach clean-up campaigns led by Xaloc Mar, focused especially on microplastics — tiny particles that local filtering systems cannot capture and that cause millions of marine animal and plant deaths each year. We’ll also be taking part in volunteer-led clean-up days.
Additionally, we will contribute to the monitoring and protection of loggerhead sea turtle nests, one of the most iconic and threatened species in the Mediterranean. During nesting season, the eggs will be safely guarded until the hatchlings are ready to return to the sea.
Beyond financial support, this partnership also includes awareness-raising and educational initiatives aimed at both our Shop&Roll team and the general public.
SHOP&ROLL AND SDG 14
This partnership is part of our broader strategy to embed sustainability and corporate responsibility across all of Shop&Roll’s activities. Our goal is not only to minimise the environmental impact of our business, but also to actively contribute to the well-being of our communities and surroundings.
In that spirit, we are proud to join forces with Xaloc Mar, which has removed over 60,000 kilos of beach waste and released 630 turtle hatchlings into the sea over the past 15 years. They also work with recycling companies to identify the most efficient and sustainable ways to reuse discarded plastics.
This initiative strengthens our alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. We’ve already made progress in this area with the 2020 launch of our Oceanis line — baskets and trolleys made from recycled marine plastic recovered from abandoned fishing nets, helping combat so-called “ghost nets.” A portion of the profits from this range was also donated to the NGO Plastic Change.
