ASEARCO, the association of entrepreneurs from municipalities in southeast Madrid, has honored our work with the Most Sustainable SME award in the first edition of their Business Awards. This accolade brings us special satisfaction because it recognizes “the role of companies in upholding values that lead to a fairer and more sustainable world.”
The awards ceremony brought together 200 guests to acknowledge and celebrate the work of “professionals leading economic development and innovation.” The jury consisted of experts from various fields, including representatives from the Confederation of Entrepreneurs of Madrid and the Madrid Chamber of Commerce.
This ASEARCO Most Sustainable SME award thus reaffirms the success of the comprehensive sustainability strategy we launched at Shop&Roll in 2021, based on four pillars: circularity, sourcing, ecodesign, and integration. It also serves as motivation to continue our journey towards implementing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria and advancing sustainability and corporate responsibility across all our activities, aiming to improve the environment and community while enhancing our transparency.
Here are some of the key milestones highlighted in Shop&Roll’s award candidacy:
- The innovative Oceanis range of shopping baskets and carts, made from 25% discarded fishing nets and ropes that would otherwise contribute to marine litter.
- Lifecycle assessments of various products to incorporate criteria for reducing environmental impact.
- Calculation of corporate carbon footprint and measures for its reduction (such as upgrading lighting and insulation for improved energy efficiency, policies favoring hybrid vehicles, and sourcing 100% renewable energy).
- Offsetting carbon emissions through recognized absorption projects endorsed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition (5% in 2021; 10% in 2022; and 15% in 2023).
- Development of a green procurement policy to evaluate environmental criteria of products and sustainability performance of suppliers.
- Waste management efforts focusing on circular economy practices and circular partnerships with clients, including collaboration with Leroy Merlin on the Zero Waste project converting replaced store fixtures from Valencia into benches for our facilities and educational keychains.
- Demonstration of sustainability performance through sustainability reporting and certifications like ISO 14001 for environmental management and Ecovadis ratings.
- Environmental and social initiatives, such as those with ASPADIR (Association of Parents and Friends with Disabilities of Rivas) and SEO Birdlife for reforestation in the Southeast Regional Park.
- Employee awareness and promotion of equality in a fair workplace environment through practices and social benefits supporting work-life balance and positive work atmosphere.
